Religious

I asked a friend to come to bible study with me this week. She came once before a few weeks ago. My friend didn't come. She said she was not a religious person.

A few weeks back, I was talking to a church going friend of mine. We got on the topic of inviting non Christian friends to our fellowship. I asked her if she had any, and if she had tried talking to them about it. She told me it was no use. She told me that all her friends are not religious.

I should have invited them to the series of talks on the topic "How to be a Christian without being Religious". Then they'll have to use other excuse to reply.

God doesn't want you to be religious. He wants you to know that he is the only Lord and Saviour. He wants you to make to choice to live free from the chains of sin.
This is the Good News.

Consider the two statements:
1. Your mission is the spread the Good News to non religious people.
2. Your mission is the spread the Good News to religious people.

Seems complicate to me, is Christianity a religion? How can you adjustify that when God does not want you to be religious but God wants you to put your faith in Jesus alone and in doing so, you need to become a Christian and becoming a Christian is in a religion.

We have religions is because we have different beliefs and prioritise things differently in our lives. When people making excuses to refuse simply means they are not ready to commit.

Interesting question! Can a Christian be too religious? Or a Christian be non religious?
Before I said anything, I just want to clear up what I think about "Is Christianity a religion?"
This really depends how you depends how you define the word religion. But according to my theory, religion is simply a belief or some sort. One can only be a fact or a religion.
eg. Jesus died.
is a fact.
but Jesus died for our sin.
is a religion.
"How to be a Christian without being Religious?"
This seems like a question to me saying "How to be a doctor without treating patient?"
"being Religious" simply mean acting towards your faith. If you are atheist, living everyday like there is no god is "being religious " and acting towards his/her faith. So if someone wants to say "I don't wanted to be a religious Christian" that simply means you want to be a hypocrite, not acting what you believe in. So can Christians be too religious? No, they can't. But they can be religious in the wrong sense. Just like trying to keep yourself holy by not interacting with people, boasting about how much law you kept from the bible.

Christian is famous to be known as "Hypocrite". (From other religions and many atheist belief) We say one thing and do another. Like how many Christian are loving our neighbor as yourself? How many are loving God with all your heart, all your mind, all your soul. You hardly find any! I can assure you being Christian is not saying we are all loving but acknowledge we are not and trying to be. Christians are not rules followers but goal achievers. We have our goal to become Christ-like in order to became Christian.

Just make sure everyone knows that what I said is just my idea. No backup evidence what so ever. And I am not an expert or anything, so feel free to disagree.

Hey Jacky, I know you like to quote the bible (from past comments you've posted). Are there any passages or instances where Jesus tells people to be religious?

How do you tell if a person is Religious? Being religious doesn't make you a christian, just like going to church doesn't make you a christian. So being religious and being a christian are not equivalent?

Refering to my Original Post, I talk about two friends of mine. From my "story", what do you think their definition of religious is? From this definition, does the bible tell us to be religious?

Is there is a flaw to the excuse of my first friend. Is there a flaw to the excuse of my second friend. There is a flaw to one of the two statements at the end. Do you agree?

I would like to quote from the bible too but there are things that you just can't. Mainly, because the term "religious" is used in the modern day. I am mainly looking from a non Christian point of view. Just imagine if Abraham was alive today and built an altar for sin offering, a normal person reaction would considered him as a religious person. If Jesus was alive today and always about the kingdom is near, you would also considered him to be religious. To a non religious person, praying before meal would seems to be religious. The point I am trying to make is that you don't need to worry about being not religious enough or being too religious. All you need to worry about is if what it says in the bible is true, how are you going to act?
P.S. I don't care if someone says I am too religious. I would just say "You will do similar if you understand what I understand about the bible"

Religious is usually a term used by non Christian or lack of knowledge in a religion. I don't see the point of finding flaws through those excuses that both of your friend provide. An excuse is an excuse. It is something that hidden the reason of their true heart. From what see in the situation, the way that they are saying it means "It's not for me!" or "It's not for them". The first person may be scare of taking a new step or unwilling to give up what she has. While the second person is saying it either because she is afraid to approach them with chrisianity that may cause conflict between their relationship or her friends are really don't care about God and afterlife.
By the common term that we use, "being religious" simply means they are acting different according to what they believe. It doesn't show either we are doing the right or wrong thing.

This issue doesn't seem to bother me so much, perhaps it's because I think it will just make me end up getting stuck over semantics.

We don't have to use the term "religion" if we don't want. But it seems a fact to me that everyone has a set of core assumptions that defines the way they see the world and accept or reject beliefs they come across.

So I think maybe we can just talk to our friends about beliefs for a start. Having tried that a few times, I can say it makes for interesting conversation, but often you will realise people have very different assumptions. :)

Religion: noun. 1. belief in a controlling superhuman power entitled to obedience, reverence, and worship. 2. the feeling or spiritual attitude of those recognizing such a controlling power. 3. something regarded as being of great importance or involving moral; eg. To make a religion of doing something.

Religious: adjective. 1. of or relating to religion. 2. believing in religion; pious; devout. 3. very conscientious; eg. To do something with religious care

Religion is about belief: Creation: Genesis 1, John 1

Religious is about acting on those beliefs: Romans, Corinthians, etc,

Hmmm…..Is it therefore fabulous to be religious about the Christian Religion?
