Amen

While I was attending a recent church service, I ocassionally hear someone from the audience shout out "Amen" while the preacher makes a teaching. I never knew what "Amen" really meant. To me, "Amen" was a word used to "sign off", "log out" or merely say goodbye to God at the end of my prayers. Until recently, I found out that "Amen" comes directly from Hebrew, and it means "surely, indeed, truly". With this definition in mind, the word "Amen" has a number of major uses within the bible.
  • An agreement or affirmation
  • An endorsement of Praise or Prayer
  • The Truthfulness of Inspired Documents
  • The Faithfulness of God
  • Spoken by Christ

Read all about it here.

In fact, Jesus has been described as "The Amen" at Revelations 3:14 to reflect that he is the firm, certain, sure, steady, trustworthy, established word from God.

Amen!

so what do we mean by "Amen" when we say it at the end of a prayer. e.g. we pray "thank you God for a wonderful day, Amen" or "Dear God, please give me a save journey today. Amen"

So why do people shout out "so be it" or "indeed" in Hebrew? why not in English or Latin or Greek... or why don't they just learn Hebrew and speak or something...

Just tradition perhaps. passed down from the first person who prayed to God
