Ricky

Another month of SHUM (Surry Hills Urban Mission).

Today I had the opportunity to talk to Ricky. He knew a bit about Christianity. He knows about God. He knows God is there. He knows that God is creator. He knows about sin. He knows what Jesus did.

He thought that he can go to heaven if he is good and does good things. Hopefully, he now knows that that's not the case.

Ricky wants to hold on to his own Crown though. He is 20yrs old and says he's still young.
He said he will turn to Jesus later. He said he needed get more out of life and enjoy a bit more before turning to God. He thinks that a Christian life is all about praying and going to church everyday. He is equating Boring with Holy.

I think he has been preached to many times before, though he pretends to be ignorant. Thanks to God we have been able to clarify the picture tonight. I hope that our words will make him think and rethink.

I find it really hard to tell people that there is an urgency to turn from sin. Even I, think that it is unlikely that my world will end tomorrow. and christians have been preaching that the end is near for two thousand years.

Hey! it's really encouraging to hear about your experiences at SHUM. It's so great to hear about how fellow brothers and sisters go out and share God's love and share Christ with those that don't know him! And in doing so you remind all of us what the basis of our lives are and should be!

I don't know why but reading your blog just filled me with a great excitement over who God is and how he really is such a wonderful God!! Thanks for your post Jot =)

Thanks for your post Sally-ann.
Your post is just as encouraging!

I do not think that people are really equating Holy with boring. They see being Holy is a committment, an obligation. Something that you have to do. They believe that they are obliged to give up their own personal freedom. Hence they believe that they are still young and want to "have fun while they can".

This is one distinction people have to clarify: Religion on the one hand, asks that you do, that you give, and that you work to gain the favour of God. Of course, we know this has never been the way out. Christianity on the other hand, offers salvation, without money, without price, without any kind of ritual.

The only one condition is to acknowledging that you are a sinner, that you believed Jesus Christ died as your substitute on the cross. When you believe that, you are accepted by God, and you are saved for eternity.
